Evidence, not opinion, demonstrates that:
the latest mass killing involved a firearm in the U.S. happened Wednesday in Winder, Georgia, where four people were fatally shot at Apalachee High School. Students ran for safety in the football stadium. While officers swarmed the campus near Atlanta, parents raced to find out if their children were safe. Teen charged in Georgia school shooting and his father to stay in custody after hearings. https://apnews.com/article/georgia-school-shooting-suspect-apalachee-high-e13b91e80c7fbefd7e3104e710afeb8d?user_email=e34de2caa4177e83014cf561f87826ab052781bd985ab09f6bcab46cecc4b7d0&utm_medium=Morning_Wire&utm_source=Sailthru_AP&utm_campaign=Morning%20Wire_6%20Sept_2024&utm_term=Morning%20Wire%20Subscribers
It was the country’s 30th mass killing this year, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University. https://projects.apnews.com/features/2023/mass-killings/index.html. So far this year, 22 of 30 recorded mass killings (73%) have involved a firearm. Id. Of 604 total mass killings in the database, 475 (79%) involved firearms. Shooting victims make up 81% of the 3,120 victims of mass killings since 2006. Id. Mass killings in schools and places of worship are uncommon. There have been 14 mass killings in schools and seven in houses of worship since 2006. While rare, these mass killings resulted in some of the highest numbers of deaths. Id.
At least 131 people have died this year in those killings, which are defined as incidents in which four or more people die within a 24-hour period, not including the killer — the same definition used by the FBI. Last year ended with 217 deaths from 42 mass killings in the U.S., making 2023 one of the deadliest years on record. Id.
Further, firearms are used far more often to intimidate than in self-defense. Hemenway, David; Azrael, Deborah, The relative frequency of offensive and defensive gun use: Results of a national survey. Violence and Victims. 2000; 15:257-272, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11200101/. Moreover, guns in the home are used more often to intimidate intimates than to thwart crime. Azrael, Deborah R; Hemenway, David. In the safety of your own home: Results from a national survey of gun use at home. Social Science and Medicine. 2000; 50:285-91, https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S027795369900283X. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, unintentional shootings happen to children of all ages. The two age groups most likely to unintentionally shoot themself or others are high schoolers between 14 and 17 years old, followed by preschoolers ages 5 and younger. Firearms are now the leading cause of death for U.S. children and teens under the age of 18. And the reality is that having firearms in the home increases the risk of unintentional shootings, suicide and homicide. A 2023 survey data found that 72 percent of gun owners cite personal protection as a “major reason” for gun ownership. Katherine Schaeffer, “Key facts about Americans and guns,” Pew Research Center (2024) https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/07/24/key-facts-about-americans-and-guns/ But it is wrong to say that most criminals are shot by law-abiding citizens.
Criminals almost always go to the hospital when they are shot. To believe fully the claims of millions of self-defense gun uses each year would mean believing that decent law-abiding citizens shot hundreds of thousands of criminals. But the data from emergency departments belie this claim, unless hundreds of thousands of wounded criminals are afraid to seek medical care. But virtually all criminals who have been shot went to the hospital, and can describe in detail what happened there. May, John P; Hemenway, David. Oen, Roger; Pitts, Khalid R. Medical Care Solicitation by Criminals with Gunshot Wound Injuries: A Survey of Washington DC Jail Detainees. Journal of Trauma. 2000; 48:130-132, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10647578/ and May, John P; Hemenway, David. Do Criminals Go to the Hospital When They are Shot? Injury Prevention. 2002; 8:236-238, https://injuryprevention.bmj.com/content/8/3/236
Finally, more permissive gun laws are making people less safe. In the states with the weakest gun laws, gun deaths rose 46 percent from 2012 to 2020, compared with just a 7 percent increase in the states with the strongest gun laws over that same period. Data shows that firearm homicides fell much faster in 2023 in states with the strongest gun laws, while states with the weakest gun laws saw marginal, if any, improvements to public safety.
